The quiet ones are overlooked because the noisy ones get all the attention. That is the plight of leaders who succumb to the demands of the loud and needy segments of their businesses. Leaders' time, normally used in the development of their people, can often be skewed in one direction. It is not that these segments are outperforming but so often the noise is a smoke screen to distract leaders from the real issues. They demand more than their fair share of the organization's resources. In the meantime, quiet employees get on with the business of the day. They make little or no demands; They do not abuse times for refreshing - coffee breaks, lunch...; They do not plunder the organization's resources; They do not rock the boat. They just show up, get their work done to a high standard, and go home. Some consider this their lot; this is just the way it is; we are powerless to do anything about it. Leaders often overlook providing quiet employees with training or doing their annual performance appraisal on time (I prefer 'performance development'). The quiet ones don't get the privilege of attending conferences or networking at the organization's expense. In other words, quiet employees run the risk of being taken for granted and to some extent, abused. Arguably, quiet employees might need to be more assertive. Some support could help in this regard. But leaders need to be aware of where the productivity is being generated and reward those who consistently deliver on organizational objectives. Do leaders even know the names of the quiet employees? After all, they are not in their offices constantly making demands? Do leaders have data to show who benefits from what the organization offers - training, conferences, networking - to ensure that the benefits are justly spread to deserving employees? Quiet employees must not be punished by leaders while noisy employees are rewarded to keep them quiet. If you are a quiet employee, drop a comment if you have been affected in this way.
