Leadership Cayman Class Complete First Seminar of 2017

LC 2017 - Media in our Community

The 2017 Leadership Cayman class completed their first seminar on February 8, where they learnt more about the role the media plays in the community.

The class met at Camana Bay, where they were taken on a tour of the Hurley’s Media facilities. The class spent the hour tour finding out more about the media outlet’s setup and their day-to-day operations.

They later grouped at the Chamber of Commerce offices in Governors Square for the seminar, for which Logic’s Cristina Durango was mentoring. With support from moderators & Leadership Cayman alumni Rosie Dunsford and Jonathan Roney, Cristina explained more about how local media can influence our lives, and how they operate within the wider community.

When asked about the current state of media, Rosie Dunsford commented:

“In an ever-changing world, the media is having to work harder and harder to maintain the trust of its target audience. At a time where ‘alternative facts’ are spoken about and tweeting has arguably become the fastest way to access the news whilst empowering everyone with a voice, print, TV & radio are going to have a much greater challenge on their hands than simply reporting on what they believe to be true.”

Guest speakers were also present for the session. Tammy Sulliman (Cayman 27), Norma McField (Radio Cayman) and Wendy Ledger (Cayman News Service) were all present to impart their expertise on the subject matter.

The Leadership Cayman class will meet for their second seminar of the year on February 22, where they will be learning more about Financial Services.

We would like to thank all our guest speakers, mentors and moderators for their involvement in the seminar.

We would also like to thank our major sponsor, Cox Lumber, for their support of the programme.
