Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth

To commemorate Commonwealth Day on Monday, 13 March 2017 in the Cayman Islands, the Commonwealth Flag will once again be raised outside the Government Administration Building, promptly at 10 am during a ceremony from 9.45 to 10.10 am.

This is part of an international ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ initiative that day. This year’s special theme for Commonwealth Day is ‘A Peace-building Commonwealth’.

In attendance at the event will be the Governor, the Premier, the Deputy Governor, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, government officials, members of the Cadet Corps, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts.

After a short introduction, the Honorary Representative of the Royal Commonwealth Society in the Cayman Islands, Mr. Lemuel Hurlston, CVO, MBE, JP, will read out a message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General. This will be followed by a reading of the Commonwealth Affirmation by a member of the Girl Guides and the raising of the Commonwealth Flag by a Cadet Corps member.

Additionally, Youth Parliament will once again take place at the Legislative Assembly building Monday where high school and tertiary education students will take over the LA to become parliamentarians and debate two motions.

The flag-raising is a common act of witness around the globe where members of a great family of nations will reaffirm the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity, according to a Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth press release.

Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Originator and Commonwealth Pageantmaster of 'Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’, states: "It is a positive and uplifting way for people to link with fellow citizens of the Commonwealth in a family that spans across oceans and continents. There is a real sense of promise, and hope for the future in this current troubled world of ours.”
