Law & Order: Leadership Cayman Class Tackle Criminal Justice

LC Criminal Justice 2017

The criminal justice system is vital to all nations and communities, providing us with the security and fairness to make us feel safe. This week, the Leadership Cayman class learnt more about the criminal justice system of the Cayman Islands.

The day started with a tour of Northward Prison, followed by an evening seminar held at the courthouse. The class were provided with an overview of the justice system, and later discussed challenges the system faces, and strategies for improvement.

The speakers for the seminar included:

• Anthony Ennis – Deputy Police Commissioner

• Cheryl Richards QC – Director of Public Prosecutions

• George Roper – Former inmate at Northward & non-profit founder

When asked what she thought about the seminar, Cheryl Richards QC commented:

“It was notable that the suggestions and ideas for change and improvement in the criminal justice system which they gave were underpinned by a sense of engagement in the process, and were insightful and practical.”

“Participants see themselves as a part of the solution, and this bodes well for the Leadership Cayman programme and the community as a whole.”

Former Northward inmate George Roper stated:

“Our major concern is youth. We need to teach them compassion, respect and caring in order to give them the best opportunity for a positive life.”

The Criminal Justice Seminar was moderated by Janette Goodman and Catherine Healy (of Butterfield), and Caine Smith served as mentor.

The Leadership Cayman class will meet next on April 5 to discuss Immigration.

The Chamber would like to thank all our guest speakers, mentors and moderators for their involvement in the seminar. They would also like to thank our seminar sponsor, Butterfield, and programme sponsor, Cox Lumber, for their support of the programme.
