Chamber Candidates Forums Begin with East End

East End Candidates Forum - April 10 (Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce)
L-R: President Kyle Broadhurst, Isaac Douglas Rankine, John McLean Jr., Arden McLean, CEO Wil Pineau

The Chamber’s series of Candidates Forums started Monday night (April 10) at Clifton Hunter High School with the East End candidates in attendance.

Current MLA Arden Mclean, and candidates John McLean Jr. and Isaac Douglas Rankine all took to the stage to answer questions submitted by Chamber members and the wider community.

Chamber CEO Wil Pineau served as the evening’s moderator, and President Kyle Broadhurst served as a panellist asking the questions. The pair will maintain these roles throughout all of the upcoming forums.

The candidates were asked a series of national and constituency related questions. The questions covered a range of important topics that are often cause for debate – including education, economic growth, immigration, the environment, and job creation.

The responses proved insightful for the audience, with contrasts in opinion. Each candidate identified different issues as the top priority for their constituency. Arden McLean noted educational improvements were the most important concern for East End residents; John McLean Jr. addressed the need for employment opportunities & protection for Caymanians; and Isaac Douglas Rankine expressed the need for economic diversity across the Islands and the district.

“When the Chamber was established in 1965, the goal was to create an institution that supports, promotes and protects the interests and welfare of its members, and the wider community,” said President Broadhurst. “Being non-partisan, we have hosted forums every election year since the 1980s, and for eight elections we have provided members of the community with an opportunity to meet their candidates and educate themselves before Election Day.”

Each of the three candidates will be campaigning over the coming weeks for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, and the East End forum was just the beginning of their efforts. The Chamber has partnered with Hurley’s Media to broadcast all of the 19 forums live on Cayman27, and online.
