In Case You Missed It: Record Turnout for Earth Day as Over 2,000 Volunteers Keep Our Roads & Beaches Clean

ED CU Team 2017

The Chamber of Commerce’s annual Earth Day Clean-up took place on Saturday, April 22, and a record number of volunteers made their way out to keep our Islands clean, safe, and picturesque.

Over 2,000 members from the community were out in force, filling bag after bag of litter, garbage, and other unexpected and unusual items.

For example, the Strategic Risk Solutions (SRS) team collected a grand total of 15 bags, which included littered items such as diapers, rodents, wine bottles, and syringes.

Several thousand bags of garbage were collected during the 3-hour clean-up, and other strange items volunteers found included:

• Christmas decorations;

• A Spiderman toothbrush;

• Underwear;

• ¾ of a Honda steering wheel;

• A water heater;

• Shopping carts; and much more!

“The Cayman Islands are such a beautiful place to live, and the natural beauty is often tarnished by the litter and garbage that people dispose of incorrectly in our community,” said Chamber CEO, Wil Pineau.

“The Chamber’s Environmental Pledge vows to ensure that our community is safe and clean for all, and the Earth Day Clean-up is an important aspect of that pledge. It’s just fantastic to see so many people in our community show an interest in keeping our home as beautiful and hygienic as it deserves to be.”

After the hours of hard work, several hundred volunteers then made their way to George Town Yacht Club where a well-deserved brunch was waiting.

The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all volunteers for their amazing and record-breaking efforts during the 2017 clean-up, and they would also like to thank the supporting corporate sponsors for showing their commitment to keeping our Islands clean and safe.
