The Health Services Authority (HSA), delivering on its duty of care to all patients to ensure that practicable steps are taken to protect patients from health and safety risks whilst on any of its premises, has expanded its Fire Marshal Programme to Cayman Brac.
Since the start of the year, 13 staff members of the Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac have completed the United Kingdom accredited Basic Fire Safety Awareness and Fire Marshal courses, launched by the HSA in 2016. Meanwhile in Grand Cayman 38 staff were trained this year bringing the total complement of employees operating as fire marshals across HSA to 94.
A graduation ceremony was held recently at the Cayman Islands Hospital and for the first time at the Faith Hospital where the new batch of marshals were presented with badges and certificates.
Brac Fire Marshal Melissa Ritch noted, “This programme is very beneficial to Faith Hospital as it improves the safety of staff members, patients and the premises.”
“The Fire Marshal Programme has provided the organisation with valuable and timely information gathered from fire risk assessments performed by the marshals,” said Occupational Health and Safety Manager Debra Gaffigan.
“There are currently 94 fire marshals at the HSA. Each of these employees volunteered to be part of the programme and they dedicatedly continue to perform their daily and monthly marshal duties on a voluntary basis,” she continued.
“The main focus of the Fire Marshal Programme is to have the right people in the right place at the right time. Having these well-trained and committed employees operating as marshals throughout the HSA promotes a culture of safety and creates a safer environment for our valued patients, employees and visitors,” Ms Gaffigan stated.
