George Town Landfill Closed Due to Fire

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) wishes to advise that George Town Landfill is closed to the public. The closure is the result of a fire that erupted in the main landfill between 12 and 12.30 p.m. today.

Cayman Islands Fire Service arrived quickly on the scene and is working assiduously to extinguish the blaze that started near the top of the landfill. Fire officers with the Central and West Bay fire stations, along with off-duty fire personnel, are currently on the scene.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s helicopter was deployed and is using thermal imaging equipment to assess the fire.

DEH anticipates that the smoke will be eliminated by the end of the day as all the necessary measures are in place to deal with the situation.

A detailed report will be provided as soon as a full assessment is carried out by DEH’s operations team.
