Ms. Olive Honoured at Queen's 92nd birthday celebrations

The Cayman Islands will celebrate Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday on Saturday, 9 June 2018. The public is invited to attend the festivities, which will mark Her Majesty’s 92nd birthday.

A parade by the uniformed services will precede an awards ceremony. The event takes place just outside the Legislative Assembly building and is to recognise new recipients of Queen’s Honours.

Ms. Olive Miller is the sole Officer of the British Empire (OBE) recipient. The honour comes 40 years after receiving her Member of the British Empire (MBE) medal.

She is recognised for her lifelong commitment to community services, including founding the Girls Brigade, helping to open the Cayman Islands High School and Pines Retirement Home, as well as serving as the government’s first Information Officer.

It was announced that Ms. Miller would receive her honour in January 2018. Betty Baraud and Bill Hrudey were also honoured as MBEs. Dr. Hrudey received his award, for work promoting science, at an investiture ceremony held early this year prior to his passing. Ms. Baraud will travel to the UK to receive her award, for her volunteering and fundraising efforts.

The Parade and Ceremony start at 9.30 a.m., but guests and the public should be in place by 9 a.m. In the event of wet weather, the ceremony will take place inside the George Town Town Hall starting at 10 a.m.

Officials note that a dress code of semi-formal daywear (or your Sunday best) is enforced for these celebrations. Hats are optional.

The Queen’s Birthday Celebration is organised each year by the Protocol Office. For general event queries, please contact them at 244-3612 or [email protected].
