The annual Poppy Appeal kicked off this morning (Thursday, 10 October) when His Excellency the Acting Governor, Franz Manderson, met with members of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association.

The Acting Governor was pinned with the appeal’s first poppy by former United States Marine Shadden McLaughlin and also made the first donation into a collection box.

>The Association gave Mr. Manderson a “Lest We Forget” wristband, which will also now be available to the public. He was then shown a “There But Not There” a tabletop silhouette, representing all the British and Commonwealth Fallen of the First World War and the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

The ceremony to launch the appeal took place in the lobby of the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, where there will be a collection until the appeal closes on Remembrance Day (12 November). The highpoint of Remembrance observations is the Remembrance Sunday parade and ceremony (11 November).

All money raised in the Poppy Appeal goes towards welfare for veterans in the Cayman Islands. Donations can be made to collection boxes at the Government Administration Building and at many locations in Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.
