Gender Affairs Unit Bolsters Honouring Women Month

Counselling ServicesMarch’s Honouring Women Month (HWM) events have been significantly boosted by a strategic alliance between the Ministry of Community Affairs’ Gender Affairs Unit (GAU) and the Family Resource Centre (FRC). “The Gender Affairs Unit and the FRC essentially share the same goals in advocating for gender equality and highlighting the role of women in society. We both appreciate the importance of government agencies working collectively towards common objectives, especially those which will impact not only women and their families but the community as well,” said Senior Policy Analyst (Gender, Diversity and Equality) Karlene Bramwell.

“Many of the campaigns and programmes that the Family Resource Centre runs; particularly those for Honouring Women Month, are designed to promote greater equity and social cohesion in the wider community. Therefore it is entirely natural that we support one another,” explained the Ministry’s Deputy Chief Officer André Ebanks. Earmarked to offset the cost of staging activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the observance in the Cayman Islands; the GAU has contributed $9,000 which represents the largest single donation made to the Family Resource Centre from an entity.

Additionally, the GAU will also be participating in many of the HWM’s activities. Mr. Ebanks presented the cheque, following a tour of the FRC’s temporary offices at Walker House, 77 Mary Street, George Town. Programme Facilitator Anne-Marie Diaz, who received the cheque on behalf of the FRC, agreed: “We are delighted by the Ministry’s donation in support of HWM activities. There is increasing evidence that shows that empowering women in communities is a precursor of social and economic growth.”
