Enhance Your Fraud Prevention Skills with CIMA, RCIPS & the Chamber of Commerce

The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) in collaboration with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s (RCIPS) Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) and the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce will host the 2016 Know Your Money Fraud Prevention Seminar from 15-16 November 2016.

This year’s seminar will be held at the Chamber of Commerce conference room. The seminars are split into four half day sessions; with the morning sessions commencing at 8:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions commencing at 1:15 p.m.

“The Authority is once again pleased to co-host this important biennial event. With the advancement of technology, we recognize that fraudsters are coming up with new and clever tactics which threaten this industry every day. Therefore, we must become equally empowered to find proactive and innovative strategies to counter such actions. It is also vital that we educate the public to remain vigilant in our day to day transactions. This Fraud Prevention seminar will provide useful tips which will help persons protect themselves and their businesses against fraudulent operations,” said CIMA’s Managing Director, Mrs. Cindy Scotland.

Presenters will include representatives from the RCIPS Financial Crimes Unit, United States Secret Service and Cayman Islands banknote printers, De La Rue. They will cover a range of topics including banknote features, counterfeit detection, credit card fraud, phishing and cybercrime, amongst other related areas.

The seminars are primarily geared towards business leaders and employees, who are often the first line of defence when it comes to detecting fraud or handling money. However, the sessions are open to any member of the public.

The upcoming Pirates Week festivities and Christmas season is the time of year where we see incesased cash transactions and is therefore timely to educate and enhance the public’s awareness of fraud prevention methods.

Speaking about the workshops, Chamber CEO Wil Pineau, CCE, said: "The Chamber of Commerce is delighted to partner with CIMA and the RCIPS to host these workshops which are intended to educate the business community about ways to detect counterfeit US and CI currency and to guard against fraudulent activities involving credit and debit cards and cyber threats. The information shared during the free workshops is invaluable and I would strongly encourage businesses to send staff members to attend one or more of the four free half day sessions. The workshops are led by experts who are on the front line in the ongoing battle to reduce financial crime. You will want to hear what they have to share and the steps that should be taken to reduce your business risk."

Businesses are strongly encouraged to register their staff for one of the free workshops. You can register for the workshops via the Chamber of Commerce’s website. The workshops will be held at the Chamber of Commerce's Conference Room in their Governors Square offices.
