Marine parks in the Cayman Islands were established 26 years ago. Threats to the life in our waters have worsened dramatically in that time.
As such, the Department of Environment has carried out a comprehensive review of all the parks, and combining that information with extensive public feedback acquired last September, have designed a new network of marine parks and regulations to ensure that they are providing optimal protection for Cayman’s marine habitats and supporting sustainable use of our marine resources for future generations.
The Department of Environment has received the go-ahead to initiate the final round of public consultations on the proposals for this enhanced system of Marine Parks arising from the Darwin Initiative project which is due to be completed early next year.
The Department of Environment will use this opportunity to present the proposals to members of the Chamber and provide attendees with a chance to ask questions or provide their own feedback on the proposals.
