CAYMAN CLEAN campaign launches this week

Littering is a serious problem facing our islands. Each year thousands of volunteers join the Chamber and more than 30 corporate sponsors for the annual Earth Day Roadside and Beach Cleanup held in April to remove unsightly litter that has accumulated on vacant lots, along the roadside and washed up on our shores.

Many other community groups also organise regular cleanups throughout the year. While these regular cleanups should be encouraged and continued the Chamber Council wanted to do more to address the litter problem.

That’s when the CAYMAN CLEAN campaign was born. CAYMAN CLEAN is a Chamber partnership with the Northward Prison Service rehabilitation unit, the Department of Environmental Health and the Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Unit and Cox Lumber to construct and place attractive custom designed trash receptacles in high traffic locations.

The durable wooden structures have been designed and constructed by the prison workshop and will be placed in prominent and visible locations where people gather.

The first structure will be placed at the Smith Barcadere site on 3rd October. President Chris Kirkconnell and other members of the Council will be joined by the Hon. Dwayne Seymour and other Government officials involved with the project.

10 structures have been completed. If your business would like to sponsor additional structures to be constructed and placed in other areas, please contact the Chamber at [email protected].
